'Storrowed' In September, Stuck Box Truck Causes Backup

The truck's top was peeled off by the bridge when it attempted to squeeze into the tunnel by Copley Tuesday morning during rush hour.

BOSTON — The Sept. 1 move-in day around the city, as college students came back for the school year, is well past us, but the "storrowing" is not.

All lanes are up and running again on Storrow Drive after a box truck attempted to enter the Storrow Tunnel eastbound at Copley and then promptly got "storrowed," this morning around 7 a.m. The right lane was blocked for about an hour as crews helped get the truck un stuck at . State police said there were no injuries.

For those of you who are just tuning in, "storrowed" is the Boston term for when a truck that's too tall to make it under a low bridge on Storrow Drive misses the warning signs and gets stuck underneath, often ripping off the top of truck and or creating a backup on the roadway. In some cases, trucks have been known to flip or roll over.

And there's a marked rise in such happenings around Boston's Sept. 1 move in date, as folks from out of town drive around the city, State Police told Patch.

"When college starts, people who are not familiar with the city are driving around. That's when you get the people who rent moving trucks and you see an uptick," said Sgt. Paul Sullivan, spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police.
