Ted Williams Tunnel Closed Friday Night, Saturday Morning

Here's what the tunnel closure means for traffic in Boston Friday night and Saturday morning.

BOSTON, MA — The Ted Williams Tunnel westbound, which carries traffic on I-90 under Boston Harbor, will be closed to all traffic this weekend, starting tonight.

That's right folks, if you usually head that way for airport pickups or scoot that way for whatever reason, watch out, you'll be rerouted. But it's not just folks who take the Ted Williams, this will also affect Sumner and the Tobin Bridge, as traffic is going to be rerouted thataway. Drivers beware.

This all starts Friday, July 20, at 11:59 p.m., and will last until Saturday, July 21 at 5 a.m. In short: It could be worse. (Comm Ave Bridge Construction phase 2 we're looking at you).

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) says this full tunnel closure is necessary for maintenance operations outside of the tunnel. During the construction, all traffic, with the exception of trucks, will be directed to the Sumner Tunnel.

Trucks will be detoured to Route 16 or the Tobin Bridge southbound.

The swing lane at the Sumner Tunnel will open at 3 p.m. Friday and will remain open until 5 a.m. on Saturday when the Ted Williams Tunnel reopens.

MassDOT said drivers should reduce speed and use caution, and allow for extra time throughout this area. All work is weather dependent and is subject to change without notice.
