BRAINTREE, MA — An 85-year-old is dead after a weekend house fire in Braintree, officials said.

John Sullivan was identified as the sole victim in a Hobart Avenue house fire on Saturday.

The Braintree Fire Department received a 911 call stating they observed a fire at 29 Hobart Ave. at 4:02 a.m.

Arriving officials found the house with heavy fire and smoke conditions, with those in command ordering more fire companies to the scene.

Extreme heat conditions and falling debris forced firefighters back after an initial interior fire attack, but officials eventually pushed in and conducted fire suppression operations and a search for occupants.

A secondary search for occupants was completed after the fire was brought under control, and that's when firefighters found Sullivan in a closed covered in clothing.

Sullivan was identified as the homeowner, and no one else was present during the fire.

According to WCVB, friends of Sullivan gathered at the Cottage Bar in Weymouth to celebrate his life at one of his favorite establishments.
