Alcohol Policy Task Force to Hold Open Forum

School Committee Chairman David Ringius announced on Monday that the task force created to look at the the high school’s alcohol policy will hold an open forum on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at Braintree High School.

“We want people to come forward to us with what they want to see,” Ringius said at Monday’s school committee meeting. “What we want to see is people using that time to make constructive suggestions on how to change the policy.”

At the start of the forum, there will be a presentation from the task force before opening the meeting up to public input. Ringius said there would be no back and forth dialouge between the task force and the public.

In October, controversy arose when several high school students at a party were disciplined by the school after it was discovered that there was alcohol consumed at the party.

As a result of the party, several students were striped of their leadership positions on their athletic teams and clubs.

Some students claimed that they were unaware of the consumption of alcohol at the party and found it unfair that they were punished as if they were drinking.

Shortly afterwards, Ringius announced the formation of the task group to see if the policies on student drinking needed to be revised.
