Alleged Drug Driver Found Slumped Over in Braintree Intersection

A Quincy man arrested on Christmas now faces a drugged driving charge from the Braintree Police Department.

Gary Matthews, 33, was also charged with failing to have his vehicle inspected, according to Braintree Police Chief Russ Jenkins.

On Dec. 25 just before 9 p.m., officers responded to a report of a man slumped over the wheel of his vehicle at the intersection of Granite Street and Forbes Road.

When officers arrived, they observed the vehicle at the light, running, with the unresponsive operator sitting in the driver’s seat with his foot on the brake pedal.

Officers placed a cruiser in front of the car in case the vehicle moved during their efforts to wake the driver, who came to after several attempts by police.

Officers had to smash out a window of the vehicle and physically remove the keys to gain control of the vehicle.

Mattews was taken into custody after officers made observations during a conversation that led them to believe that he was under the influence of drugs.
