Braintree Homework Policy Survey Results Expected This Week

The survey was put out so school officials can see if changes need to be made to homework policy.

BRAINTREE, MA — Last week, Braintree Public Schools conducted a parent survey asking about the effectiveness of the district's homework policy, and thousands of parents responded, Superintendent Jim Lee said.

"We received about 2,100 responses to the survey and are still in the process of compiling the results," Lee said Wednesday. "The survey was part of an ongoing conversation we have been having around homework and our related policies."

Lee said survey results could be ready to share as early as next week.

The survey was put out so school officials can see if changes need to be made to homework policy, said Interim Assistant Superintendent Courtney Miller at the Feb. 7 school committee meeting.

"This is a very baseline survey trying to get some feedback from families about how at the elementary, the middle and high school level families are feeling homework is being successful or not so successful at home," Interim Assistant Superintendent Courtney Miller said at last week's school committee meeting."

Depending on the survey results, they'll be referred to the school committee's policy and education subcommittee for review, Miller said.

Homework policies were most recently updated in 2016 at the high school level, Miller said. The last time they were updated for middle school students was 2011, while elementary school homework policy hasn't changed since 2007.
