Joao Alves has found a new job at a Republic Waste facility in Roxbury.

BRAINTREE, MA - A popular employee at the transfer station on Ivory Street has found a new job after losing his position in Braintree.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan announced Friday that Joao Alves has found a new job at a Republic Waste facility in Roxbury. He was recently let go from his job at the Covanta-Semass operated transfer station in Braintree.

During a press conference, Sullivan praised Republic President Kurt Lavery in hiring Mr. Alves.

“Kurt heard of Mr. Alves plight and the fact that he had a family to support and he stepped up to the meet with Mr. Alves and in doing so discovered what we all knew – that Jaso Alves is a good employee that will contribute to a company that values a committed and hard worker," Sullivan said.

Alves was previously employed by a company that had been contracted to provide labor to the transfer station. He was let go from his job over concerns about his educational background.

Upon news of his termination, residents and town officials urged Covanta to give Alves his job back. In April, the Town Council voted to send a letter to Covanta asking for Alves' reinstatement.
