Tucked away in a little strip mall on Pearl Street is a BBQ lovers dream come true. The sweet smell of smoked pork, beef, and chicken permeates the air of Tennessee’s as soon as you step inside. Somewhere between a takeout joint and a sitdown restaurant, Tenneesee’s offers a full range of choices: pulled pork, brisket, Dixie chicken, wings, ribs, and burritos. Wooden tables, beer barrels, and Southern effects are the décor and a casual feel fills the air.
Like any BBQ restaurant, Tennessee’s offers a full range of sides to accompany its pork, chicken, and beef offerings. BBQ beans, collard greens, cole slaw, corn bread, and a baked macaroni and cheese are among the choices.
The sandwich menu, which can be ordered with or without sides, includes sweet pulled pork, the tangy North Carolina pulled pork, brisket, pulled chicken, and BBQ beef and start at $6.50. BBQ plates include either a full or half portion of Chicken, Memphis ribs, Baby back ribs, and Texas beef and a choice of three sides start at $9.29 for the chicken and $11.29 for ribs. Hot wings, burritos, and salads round out the menu. Tennessee’s also offers catering services.

We tried the Pulled Pork ($6.50) sandwich and Baby Back Ribs plate ($11.79). The pulled pork was moist and tasty just like it should be. Although the Baby Back Ribs were a little dry, they also weren’t drenched in sauce like some other places. Instead we got to choose our own BBQ sauce to moisten them up (sweet, hot, or mild.) For sides we went with the Cucumber Salad, Dirty Rice, and Baked Sweet Potato. The rice was a little on the cold side but the cucumber salad was sweet and crispy and the sweet potato was good too.
Tennessee’s has a beer and wine license and serves cold bottles of Corona, Heineken and the like, and they also have their own brand of ale on tap. Additionally, the restaurant offers fountain style soda pop, including a nice root beer.

The next time you’re headed to Burger King for a quick meal, take a left instead and head into Tennessee’s. You'll be glad you did.
