The weather may feel like September, but isn’t it a little early for the Red Sox to be collapsing? The supposedly dominant team has begun the season dismally. At 5-10, the Sox are in last place in the American East division, a spot normally occupied by the Baltimore Orioles. We love to play the blame game here in Boston—but whose fault is this really?
Too many people in the sports media are pinning this debacle on management. They’ll scream that it’s John Henry or Larry Lucchino or Ben Cherrington or Bobby Valentine. But I’m here to tell you it’s the players. The roster that these executives and baseball operations people have assembled isn’t bad. The players all have the potential. They just need it to click. They need to get out on the field and put the bat on the ball. They need to play like they want to win.
He’d have you believe he is, but Bobby V isn’t hitting homeruns. It’s supposed to be Youkilis. It’s supposed to be the guys with the big contracts that stipulate them playing. And once they start playing well, they’ll win. No figurehead manager in the club house or billionaire owner in a luxury box can change that.
