Braintree Closer to Banning Uber and Lyft

Board of License Commissioners voted to draft a cease and desist letter to Uber and Lyft.

The city of Braintree is now one step closer to halting rideshare companies from picking up customers in town.

On Tuesday, the Board of License Commissioners voted to allow the Town Solicitor to draft a cease-and-desist letter to Uber and Lyft according to the Boston Herald.

If approved, rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft would have to register as a livery or taxi service in order to operate in Braintree. In the past, Uber has said that they are not subject to existing regulation because they are not a standard taxi service, arguing that they only connect riders and drivers through their app, something they say is not covered by current regulations.

In February, the Braintree Town Council voted to ask the commissioners to look into the issue.
