Braintree Elections 2019: What's Next?

Eight of the nine Braintree Town Council seats will see contested races in November's election.

BRAINTREE, MA — With the preliminary election in the books, it's time to move on to the November town election. Tuesday night narrowed the field of Braintree mayoral candidates from four to two and saw District 1 Town Councilor Charles Kokoros and Electric Light Board commissioner Thomas Reynolds Jr. advance. But that's not the only race voters will decide on Nov. 5, as eight of Town Council's nine seats will be contested.

Five of those contested races are for open seats. Kokoros and District 3 Councilor Thomas Bowes ran for mayor, while Councilor At-large Councilor Sean Powers briefly ran for mayor but dropped out of the race and decided not to seek re-election because of the time commitment his new role at the state's Division of Professional Licensure will require. District 2 Councilor Thomas Whalen also decided to not run again, while District 5 Councilor David Ringius announced he's running for the open at-large seat instead.

Races for School Committee, Electric Light Board, Housing Authority, and Library Trustee will not be contested.

With Mayor Joseph Sullivan also not seeking re-election, turnover is inevitable this November. The local government of Braintree is expected to change arguably the most it has since the town switched from a representative town meeting to a mayor-council system of government in 2008.

Here's who will be on the ballot for Braintree's town election. Asterisk indicate a candidate is an incumbent.
