Braintree Field Hockey Clinches Tourney Bid

Braintree High School. Field Hockey. Wamps. MIAA Tournament.

The Braintree High Varsity Girls Field Hockey secured its first ever berth to the MIAA State Tournament with a 4-0 shutout of Natick on Friday, October 7th. Great post positioning led to goals by Erin Kiley (2), Kaitlyn Biggins and Delia Lee. Supported by excellent forward and midfield play from Deirdre Burchill, Annie Lee, Felicia McDevitt, Delia Lee, Alyssa Blumenthal , and Lilly Tonetti. The Wamp defense continued their strong play, securing the shutout, and supporting the offense with rushes. Kudos to Julia Vaillancourt, Alyssa Redington, Lily Fay, and Gabriella Jones. Goalie Paige Shanley provided some dramatic moments with close calls that she rejected with kicks sending the ball back to midfield on a couple occasions. Truly a great team effort!

The Wamps now own a 9-2-1 record and sit in second place in the Bay State Carey Conference. The Wamps also cracked The Boston Globe’s Top 20 as of October 4th with a debut at #17.

Making the MIAA Tourney is quite an accomplishment, especially for a sport that has not had a youth feeder program like basketball, soccer, hockey, or lacrosse. Most girls pick up field hockey at the high school level. Field Hockey has seen a steady rise in participation the past few years as Coaches Mary Kate Callahan, Amanda Scully, Rachel Laflash, and Brittany Roeder continue to build toward the future with the additional of summer camps and skills training to expose middle schoolers to the sport.

Special thanks to the Freshman and JV Fockey teams, fellow BHS Athletes, coaches, and all the parents, families and supporters who were in attendance. The collective cheer of success was even heard at Alumni Field! Best of luck to the team as they move forward!
