Braintree High Dance Team Wins New England Championship
March win is fifth title this season for the BHS dancers.
The Braintree High varsity dance team won two dance titles at the New England High School Dance Championship at Braintree High March 9th.
BHS beat seven other high school dance teams from across New England, capturing first place in the jazz division. New to the pom division, the BHS varsity team placed second in this category to nationally ranked Hamden High of Connecticut. Braintree was the only dance team to place in the top two in two divisions and the only Massachusetts team to score wins.
Coach Jamie Campbell said the competition, in its third year, was highly competitive. “It’s fun to see what teams from other states do,” said Campbell who coaches the BHS dancers with Lindsay Coleman. “This was an exceptionally great year for our team. We had tremendous senior leadership and support
from parents and a winning record for the entire year.” The team won both Bay State and State titles in the fall 2012 and 2013 winter seasons.
Captain Alison Page said, “We’ve never done two routines in a competition before. Although it was something new, we are always willing to challenge ourselves. Our hard work and dedication paid off, resulting in the most successful season of my high school career. I couldn’t be more proud of my team.”
The team of 24 dancers led by captains Ashley Boyle, Rae Lynch, Alison Page and Rose Thackeray, includes seniors Emily Helbig, Amanda McCormack and Erin Moriarty; juniors Meg McCarthy, Nicole Coloma, Alex Dean, Gabbi Fiedor and Claudia McHugh; sophomores Emily DiGiusto, Jordan Nashawaty, Danielle Tressler , Jackie Swan and Shae Vartanian; and freshmen Emma DiBona, Julia Mahoney, Kelly Martin, Haley Norton, Kezia Odom, Molly O’Toole and Hannah Stewart.
BHS’s junior varsity dance team exhibited at the New England championship and at the State competition on March 2. Braintree varsity dance will perform at halftime at the Lady Wamps basketball team’s Division 1 finals at TD Garden March 11th.
The competition on March 9 was sponsored by the Council of New England Secondary School Principals' Association.
