BRAINTREE, MA — A sewer discharge is impacting the towns of both Braintree and Weymouth, and residents are also asked to avoid contact with a local body of water, officials said.

Braintree officials were managing a sanitary sewer overflow in the area of 54 Allen Street on Thursday. The discharge began at 3 a.m. on Thursday morning but, as of 12:30 p.m., officials announced that the overflow in the area of Jay Street and Arnold Street siphon had ceased, which appears to be related to the earlier issue at Allen Street.

According to officials, the discharge impacts the Monatiquot River, and residents are asked to avoid contact with that body of water. However, drinking water in Braintree isn't affected by the overflow.

"Avoid contact with these waterbodies for 48 hours after the discharge or overflow ceases due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants," a release from the town said.

"The discharge or overflow consists, or likely consists, of untreated or partially treated sewage and waste."

The town must notify residents if the discharge continues for eight hours, otherwise, officials will issue a cessation notification.
