Braintree Town Council To Honor Officers Involved In Motel 6 Shooting

BRAINTREE, MA — The Braintree police officers involved in May's Motel 6 incident will be recognized by the town council Tuesday night.

At the start of the council's meeting this week, a brief moment of recognition will be held for the officers. Tuesday's meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.

The May 5 shooting brought new attention to an area of town that has been known as a source of problems. At 9 p.m., officers went to the motel to serve an arrest warrant. After the wanted man, a motel guest named Tizya Robinson didn't respond to a knock, officers opened the door before realizing the security latch was on. Officers then announced they were outside. Robinson replied by asking who it was and the officers again said they were police. Robinson then opened fire through the door at the officers. Four shell casings from Robinson's gun were found in the room, with at least one bullet striking office Donald Delaney. Police returned fire, shooting through the door.

Delaney was taken to Boston Medical Center and continues to recover from his injuries.

Evidence from the autopsy indicates that Robinson shot himself during the gunfire, but the fatal shot came from an officer. Morrissey said it was not possible to ascertain which of the officers caused the fatal wound. Robinson was later found dead in his room.

In part due to the incident, the board of health revoked Motel 6's operating license with a judge in Norfolk Superior Court upholding the decision. The motel right off of Route 3 remains closed.
