Braintree Property Taxes Going Up 3.75 Percent
Most Braintree homeowners are looking at property taxes about $184 higher next year.
BRAINTREE, MA — Town Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a residential property tax rate of $9.86 per $1,000 of assessed value and a commercial/industrial rate of $21.81 per $1,000 of assessed value. Both of those rates are down from last year's rates of $10.09 per $1,000 for residential and $22.20 per $1,000 for industrial/commercial properties. But most people will see an increase to their tax bill because of rising property values.
The average Braintree homeowner's property taxes will go up by 3.75 percent, or about $184 because of the average residential property assessment of $515,978.53, compared to last year at $485,981.75. Most commercial and industrial property owners will also see their tax bill increase because the average value of those types of properties rose 9 percent since last year.
Property tax rates for 2020 are the lowest they've been in 10 years. Mayor Josepsh Sullivan told Patriot Ledger this is the first time the average home in Braintree was more than $500,000, and the town's property values are higher than all its bordering communities. Sullivan said when the tax rate is combined with the cost of water and municipal electricity, Braintree is of one of the most affordable communities to live in the area.
