Braintree School Report Card Shows Performance Above MA Average

The new state report cards showed Braintree above the pack for MCAS scores, attendance and more.

BRAINTREE, MA — State report cards for the 2020-2021 school year were released this week and showed Braintree performed above the state average on most metrics.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) did not make accountability determinations for the 2020-2021 school year, because of the coronavirus pandemic. But the report cards still show enrollment, MCAS score and more.

The report showed Braintree had higher MCAS scores than the state average across all five major exams.

On the 0-99 student progress scale, with higher numbers meaning more progress, Braintree scored 36.2 in Grade 3-8 English, 32.2 in Grade 3-8 math, 45.7 in Grade 10 English, and 47.5 in Grade 10 math. All of these local numbers were above the state average, except for Grade 10 English, where the state number was 52.5.

Braintree also scored well in other metrics. In measures including attendance, college attendance, access to the arts, and more, the town outperformed the state.

Despite difficulties related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Braintree schools have managed to keep attendance rates higher and chronic absenteeism rates lower than the state average. In addition, next-year college attendance is 17.6 percent higher than the state average.

Braintree spent $14,726 per student in 2020, up slightly from $14,507 in 2019. Statewide, per-student spending also rose slightly.
