Braintree St. Thomas More Church Closes After More Than 80 Years

Monday served as the final day for people to walk through the church and worship. Now, the land is for sale.

BRAINTREE, MA — After 82 years of worship services, Braintree's St. Thomas More Church has officially closed.

The building was open for two days recently — Saturday and Monday — with all people welcome to walk through, pray and pay their final respects to their church. One final prayer was led in the upper church on Monday morning before the doors were officially closed, and the property put up for sale.

According to the Patriot Ledger, upwards of 50 people attended the final service, with some referring to it as similar to attending a wake.

That property includes 16 acres of land, as well as a rectory and a building that formerly was used as a school. Assessors' records value the property at $8 million.

There's no clear picture yet of who will purchase the property, and Mayor Charles Kokoros told the Ledger that the decision would be based on what's best for Braintree as a community.
