Braintree Student Named National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist

Six more were recognized as commended students.

BRAINTREE, MA — One Braintree High School student was recently named a National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist and six more were recognized as Commended Students.

Edrick Kam is one of 16,000 high school juniors nationwide who was named a semifinalist. Kam now has the chance to apply for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships (NMSC) worth more than $32 million that will be awarded next spring.

Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC, a non-profit organization, as well as approximately 420 business organizations and higher education institutions. In addition to the Semifinalists, 34,000 students have also been recognized as Commended Students. Although they will not continue in the NMSC competition, they placed in the top 50,000 scorers of all those who took the test. The students from Braintree who were named Commended Students are Patricia Chan, Roger Kwong, Kelly Larosee, Jake Leone, Maggie O’Connell and Carl Rege.

Over 1.6 million high school juniors took part in the 2016 qualifying test.
