The public is invited to the Dept. of Elder Affairs, 71 Cleveland Avenue, Braintree to attend a presentation by guest speaker Dr. Edward Hoffer at the Dementia Support Group's regular monthly meeting, 4-5 pm.
From 3-4 pm, Alzheimer/s Association MA/NH Chapter volunteers Marcy McCreary and Kit Scholsky will offer information on the free resources -- education and support for patients and caregivers, as well as fundraising opportunities -- provided by the Alzheimer's Association. Marcy and Kit will also be available after the program to answer questions and share information.
Dr. Hoffer will discuss dementia, answering what it is, when to suspect it, the tests your doctor should perform to investigate it, the available therapies and how to prevent it.
Dr. Hoffer resides on the South Coast currently. He received his undergraduate degree at MIT, MD from Harvard and completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at Mass General Hospital.
He was in private practice for 40 years, combined with research on medical informatics at MGH and is the author of the book "Prescription for Bankruptcy.”
Dr. Hoffer continues to work part-time at the MGH Lab of Computer Science on artificial intelligence, aiming to assist doctors in making more accurate diagnoses.
A partnership between Thayer Public Library and the Department of Elder Affairs, this program is made possible in part by funding provided through State Aid to Public Libraries.
