Councilors Approves $141 Million Town Budget
The Town Council passed the fiscal year 2017 budget.

BRAINTREE, MA - The Town Council has approved the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
Tuesday, the council voted to support the $141 million budget from Mayor Joseph Sullivan. The budget is 4.5 percent higher than last year’s and has $62.5 million in school spending.
Before its approval, Sullivan referred to the budget as a “go forward budget.”

“We are a better community financially than we’ve been for a long time. The facts are that we’re good at operating. This budget is a go forward budget, it’s a good, solid document,” Sullivan said.
Among the budget’s highlights is funding for a Drug Coordinator. $109,000 has been appropriated in the budget, along with $150,000 from the state obtained by Rep. Mark Cusack.

Councilor Dan Clifford said that “seed money” would allow the town to start the hiring process for the position and fight the opioid crisis.
Sullivan submitted the budget for consideration in early May. During the month, the Ways and Means Subcommittee vetted the budget.
