Customers Can Pay at Pump with New Smartphone App at Braintree Cumberland Farms

Family-owned for more than 70 years, Cumberland Farms' network of convenience stores stretches across 11 states.

Cumberland Farms, a leading convenience and gasoline retailer with a location on Washington Street in Braintree, announced last week that the company has partnered with PayPal to create the first-of-its-kind SmartPay app that allows customers to pay at the pump using a smartphone – while giving a five-cent per gallon discount.

The SmartPay app gives customers the convenience of quickly starting the pump from a mobile phone and the security of processing the transaction through trusted online payment leader PayPal. The app works on any smartphone through a web browser, and native iPhone and Android apps are available through their respective app stores. Cumberland Farms plans on building additional innovative smartphone products through the new SmartPay app.

Cumberland Farms hopes to build customer loyalty while driving new demand from the rapidly growing smartphone user base. “We are continually seeking ways to offer consumers convenience and value,” said Cumberland Farms President Ari Haseotes. “The SmartPay app does both.  This app introduction is in line with the many ways in which we continue to evolve our company, from our store renovations, to our new food product introductions. We look forward to hearing feedback from our customers on SmartPay.”

The launch of SmartPay is part of Cumberland Farms’ strategy to innovate the store experience as customers’ needs continue to evolve.  What started with a dairy farm became the first convenience store in the Northeast, and later a pioneer in self-serve gasoline. Today, Cumberland Farms has nearly 600 stores, and President Ari Haseotes is leading a chain-wide transformation with remodeled stores, new fresh food and beverage introductions, and first mover technology such as SmartPay.
