Damaged Roofs Removed From South Middle, Ross Elementary
Both schools still need clearance from the town before reopening.
BRAINTREE, MA — Sections of the damaged roofs at Ross Elementary School and South Middle School have been removed, but both schools will need the ok from town officials before resuming class.
Superintendent Frank Hackett wrote in a letter to parents that work on removing the damaged sections from Ross Elementary is complete and was ongoing at South Middle as of Sunday afternoon. Both roofs were damaged Friday during a nor'easter which hammered nearly all of the South Shore.
"The roofing contractor mobilized very quickly, deploying a number of workers to both sites. Additionally, our crews have been working extremely hard to clean the interior spaces affected by water infiltration. A great deal has been accomplished in a short time, and we are grateful for the collective efforts of the BPS staff and the employees of the Town of Braintree under the direction of Mayor Sullivan. I am also very appreciative for the support of our school committee members, who have been actively engaged in our efforts," Hackett wrote.

Both schools have Monday off. No decision has been made on classes for the rest of the week. A decision is not expected until Monday. The building department and the school district's contracted facilities consultants must inspect, certify the repair of the roof, and confirm that the results of all air quality testing meet required standards. Once the school department has proper clearance and authorization that the buildings are safe, the schools will be reopened, Hackett wrote.
