Decision on Makeup School Days Delayed

The school committee will tackle the issue on March 16.

The Braintree School Committee will wait one more week to discuss solutions for the snow days taken this year.

With the Braintree High School girls’ basketball team facing Andover in the Division 1 semi-finals at the TD Garden tonight, this evening’s meeting has been delayed by one week.

Last week, the Commissioner of Education denied a waiver for Braintree that would have allowed the town to be exempt from the requirement that school districts must hold 180 days of school. The committee is now tasked with the difficult choice of deciding how to make up the missed days.

As it stands, kindergarten through ninth grade will finish school on June 30, the final possible day classes can be held. Students in 10th and 11th grade have a day to make up.

Last week, the committee issued a survey asking the community how they should address the canceled school days. Options included using April vacation, extending the day, Good Friday, and Saturdays.
