Former Braintree Superintendent Returns on Interim Basis
Dr. Peter Kurzberg will serve as the Braintree Public Schools' top official until a permanent successor is found.

Meet the interim boss, same as the old boss.
Monday night, the school committee voted to bring back a familiar face to serve as Braintree’s interim superintendent. Until a permanent replacement is found, Dr. Peter Kurzberg will lead the Braintree Public Schools as their top official.
“As much as I have enjoyed my two years of retirement, I am looking forwarding to spending some time in the school system again,” Kurzberg said at Monday’s school committee meeting.

School Committee Chair David Ringius said the town looked at multiple options including using a retired superintendent and promoting an internal candidate but felt Kurzberg could help the district move forward during the summer with a minimal transition.
Current Superintendent Maureen Murray will serve her final day before retirement on June 30 with Kurzberg starting on July 1.

On the superintendent search front, search committee member Taylor Sturtevant said he expects the search committee to complete their work by the end of the month with recommendations for finalists to be made at the same time.
In April, the school committee voted to terminate the search for a new superintendent when the finalists were deemed to not be the right fit to the town. Recent interest in the position from current sitting superintendents, however, led to the reformation of the search committee.
An accelerated process, Braintree’s next superintendent could start work in the fall at the earliest.
