Back in the day, there was no better way to enjoy a summer evening than to pack the kids in the car and head to your local drive in. It’s been over 25 years since the Braintree Drive In, on what is now the Logan Express airport shuttle, entertained audiences with its double-features (or thrilled young passersby on Route 128 with brief glimpses of the screen).
Drive-in movies are few and far between these days, with the closest located in Mendon and Wellfleet, but there’s just something about watching a movie outdoors that people seem to love.
To recapture those moments, Braintree’s Family Flick Nights launches its third season Wednesday night at Carson field at Braintree High School.

The first of the three film series is Furry Vengeance, starring Brendan Fraser, Brooke Shields, and lots of angry animals apparently. The event begins at 6 p.m., when the Pick-a-Party staff will be on hand with games for the kids to play. The Buck-a-Buy stand will also be open for business, with hot dogs, drinks, chips, and candy available for purchase.
The movie is slated to begin at dusk. Make sure you pack chairs, blankets, and plenty of insect repellent and enjoy a night under the stars. There will be two more Family Flick Nights: Despicable Me on July 27 and Cats & Dogs on Aug. 3.

If you’re looking to leave the kiddies at home, head to the Hingham Shipyard or the Boston Harbor Hotel for some adult time and adult fare. These venues show mostly adult-oriented films, with a few kiddie movies thrown in for good measure. At Rowes Wharf’s Movies by Moonlight series, an outdoor screen is set up on the side of the large gazebo, overlooking the Boston Harbor waterfront. This Friday night, July 15, catch the classic film Pink Panther, starring Peter Sellars. Movies by Moonlight runs through Sept. 2.
Over at the Launch at the newly refurbished Hingham Shipyard, catch outdoor flicks every Thursday night at the amphitheatre located behind Hingham Beer Works. While this week’s film is geared toward the little ones with Despicable Me, next week’s film is Julia Robert’s Eat, Pray, Love which if you haven’t yet seen it is surprisingly well-done. Movie concessions will be on sale from Patriot Cinemas, Red Mango, and Alma Nove. The series runs through Aug. 25.
The Hatch Shell along Boston’s Esplanade is also showing outdoor movies this summer. Every Friday night, set up camp along the banks of the Charles and enjoy family-friendly movies. This week’s film is Megamind, with the voices of Tina Fey, Will Ferrill, and Brad Pitt. Free Friday Flicks runs weekly through Aug. 26.
Read a Book, Watch a Movie
Finally, take part in Bookworm Wednesdays at the Showcase Cinema Deluxe in Randolph. To encourage a love of reading, National Amusements Theaters offers a free 10 a.m. showing of children’s movies on Wednesday mornings.
Simply submit a book report form for free admission and parents and guardians are also admitted free of charge. While the movies are not new releases, this week’s film is The Bee Movie, a morning out of the house with children in the cool air conditioning can be in order on these hot summer days. Bookworm Wednesdays runs through Aug. 10.
