BRAINTREE, MA — Former District 2 Town Councilor John Mullaney announced he's running for his former seat in November's town election. Mullaney was on the council for 10 years before deciding not to seek re-election in 2o17.

Mullaney, who owns his own law practice and spent 35 years working for the IRS, said he believes he would bring a "basket of experience" to the Town Council that no other candidate can offer. While in office, Mullaney said he was often in the minority and raised issues regardless of whether or not they'd pass.

"During my time in office, I am proud of the independence and innovativeness that I have showed,” Mullaney said. "I know that I have made a difference."

Mullaney said he fought for three years to increase Braintree's meal tax, which now provides the town $1.3 million a year. He also said he fought for a new high school long before the issue was in the forefront of Braintree politics.

"If I had my way, it would have been done 10 years ago," Mullaney told Patch.
