Mayor Requesting Over $2 Million In Additional Spending

In a letter to the council, Mayor Joseph Sullivan wrote that some departments require additional funds

BRAINTREE, MA — Town councilors will be asked to consider over $2 million in additional spending for the remaining of the fiscal year.

In a letter to the council, Mayor Joseph Sullivan wrote that some departments require additional funds. Much of the funds are being allocated to the police and fire departments, with the mayor requesting $512,300 for various police wage and salary lines and an additional $1 million for police overtime.

The overtime request is a result of the organization shuffle that resulted from the evidence room scandal and various staffing changes.

"With the recent hiring of five new officers recently and a civil service hiring class of six officers enter the police academy on March 5, 2018 we will be replenishing our staffing over the next six months," Sullivan wrote.

A request for $445,000 in fire department overtime is also on the request list. The funds should cover overtime usage which was used to maintain the minimum staffing level of 17 workers a shift while some firefighters were out on vacation.
