Mayor Sullivan on Missing Evidence: 'We Need to Take Corrective Steps'

Mayor Joseph Sullivan is calling for a review of how the Braintree Police Department handles evidence

BRAINTREE, MA — With hundreds of cases possibly impacted by the mishandling of evidence by the Braintree Police Department, Mayor Joseph Sullivan is calling for a review of department procedures.

Speaking with WCVB, Sullivan said he was disappointed and somewhat angered at the preliminary results of an external audit of Braintree police evidence. The mayor has ordered a review of how evidence is handled.

"We need to take corrective steps," Sullivan said.

Last week, reports came out that an audit of evidence had occurred. Sources tell WCVB that among the missing evidence is cash, drugs, and guns. The cases affected range from 2013 to this year.

The person in charge of the evidence room died unexpectedly this year.

District Attorney Michael Morrissey said his office would not use tainted evidence. He said his office has already identified impacted cases and will be reaching out to defense attorneys.
