School Enrollment Increasing, But Manageable: Braintree Superintendent

School officials say more students are staying in the Braintree Public Schools rather than attending private and vocational schools.

BRAINTREE, MA — While enrollment is up at the Braintree Public Schools, the increase is manageable, according to Braintree Superintendent Frank Hackett.

According to new data released at last week's school committee meeting, the school system started the 2017-18 school year with 29 more students than last year's start of 5,687. Hackett said the schools have been graduating smaller classes and enrolling larger classes from the middle school, adding that they are now holding on to more students who are opting not to transfer to private or vocational schools.

"Retention of students is happening because of what's happening in the classroom. Those who may have opted for another school are not taking that option. The level of instruction is very strong, especially at the high school. It's affordable in terms of the residential tax rate, it's the lowest tax rate per value in Norfolk County. The money that is being retained for government is being spent in a positive way for our schools," Mayor Joseph Sullivan said.
