South Middle School Auditorium to be Named After Outgoing Principal

The school committee approved the honor for principal Edward McDonough this week.

The South Middle School auditorium will go by a new name.

This week, the school committee voted to name the auditorium after retiring principal Edward McDonough. He spent 16 years at the helm of the school.

Superintendent Maureen Murray called the retirement, “the end of an era.”

“Given Mr. McDonough’s long and fruitful run, we would like to name the auditorium for McDonough. He had a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in that auditorium,” she said.

The superintendent added that the auditorium was where he would gather staff, students, and families for positive announcements, bad news, and to greet students.

“(The auditorium) has been the heart of South,” she said.

During his time as principal, McDonough oversaw the renovation of the auditorium.

A retirement event is planned for the outgoing principal with the date to be announced.
