Town Council Backs South Middle School Feasibility Study

The council voted to approve the use of $650,000 for a feasibility study for South Middle School.

BRAINTREE, MA — Part two of Braintree’s renovation of both middle school is underway following a vote at last week’s town council meeting.

The council voted to approve the use of $650,000 for a feasibility study for South Middle School. School officials are hoping to move forward with an addition/renovation project similar to East Middle School.

In a letter to the council, Mayor Joseph Sullivan wrote that the appropriation is needed to identify the needed cost for the project.

The project calls for the renovation of the school along with the construction of an addition to accommodate fifth grade students. Such a move would open up more space at the elementary school level, where schools are facing a space crunch. As with East Middle, town officials are hoping to be awarded a reimbursement from the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

“Similar to the East Middle School project, Braintree has always been a responsible partner with the MSBA. I think we have demonstrated our responsibility over the years and it’s nice to see we’re taking advantage of the MSBA program,” council President Sean Powers said.
