Town Council Calls On Board Of Health To Shut Down Motel 6
The motel has been closed since June 1 and the council hopes it remains that way.

BRAINTREE, MA — The Braintree Town Council has called for Motel 6 to remain closed.
The council voted 8-0 to endorse a letter drafted by council President Sean Powers to the board of health asking them to revoke the controversial motel’s license to operate. Councilor Stephen O'Brien was not present at the meeting.
“Due to the past history of criminal activity, Motel 6 in Braintree has attracted further criminal activity in part due to the lack of investment in the property. Motel 6’s current condition, unfortunately, allows for the criminal element to feel comfortable lodging and committing crimes,” the letter, in part, read.

Councilor Mike Owens, who drafted his own letter calling for the permanent closure of the motel, said revocation is necessary.
“There is no other measure that can sure the town’s safety. Revocation I believe is a necessary step and I do hope the board of health sees the dangers there and revoke the license,” Owens said.

Councilor Charles Kokoros said the letter was an appropriate way to convey how they feel about the motel.
“This vote is important to send a message, not just to Motel 6 but all other hotels that we’re not going to tolerate this type of behavior,” Kokoros said.
The motel has been voluntarily closed since June 1 and has been under heavy scrutiny since a police officer serving a warrant was by a person in a motel room.
The board of health, which has the authority to revoke the motel’s operating license, will vote on whether to allow the establishment to remain open in mid-July.
