What Could a Renovated East Middle School Look Like?

The Braintree School Committee recently looked at three options for the East Middle School project.

BRAINTREE, MA — There are multiple options, but the East Middle School renovation project seems to be leaning towards one of the three choices.

In a recent presentation to the school committee, Margaret Clark, the chief architect for the project, discussed the state of the renovation project. The proposed project will include 72 new learning spaces and a new parking area around the fields.

“We understand there is a need for parking on the weekends,” Clark said.

Of the 72 new spaces, 20 of them will be classrooms. Currently, there are 28 at the school. Clark said the best option would be to wrap the existing classrooms at the wing and connect back where the existing walkway is with a double-loaded corridor,” Clark said,

The renovation would maintain a focus on creating two schools within a school. One ring would house 5th and 6th grade students, while the other one would be for 7th and 8th graders. A second cafeteria would be added on the other side of the kitchen.

Another option builds the new classroom wing away from the school without a connection. Clark said that proposal is not the educationally preferred option.

Due to the price, a new school is an option, as required by the Massachusetts School Building Authority but is not being considered.

The school district will present the plan to the MSBA on Jan. 4.

“For anyone who has followed this process, this demonstrates that we have good momentum as we turn the
corner to the new year. We have a strong relationship with the MSBA and we have a good option one,” Mayor Joseph Sullivan said. “It ties the school together and that is going to enhance our learning opportunities.

The project has a preliminary cost of $69 million, with a more specific number to come in February or March
if the MSBA approves the project.
