What Could a Renovated East Middle School Look Like?
The first 3D renderings of the renovated East Middle School were released this week.
BRAINTREE, MA — A learning commons and two academy classrooms in the courtyard is being touted as some of the major components of the East Middle School renovation.
Will Spears and Danyul Cho of the architectural and design firm Miller Dyer Spears revealed 3D renders of the renovation of the project at Monday’s school committee meeting. The renderings are needed when the project is submitted to the Mass. School Building Authority for a May 18 meeting.
Officials said the school would be essentially new by the end of the project and discussed the learning common to be built in the courtyard between the two school wings. The learning common will be connected to two academy commons, with one exclusive for fifth and sixth graders and the other for seventh and eighth graders.

The portions of the school assigned by grade remain consistent with the plan to have one portion of the school for the two lower grades and the other part for the two higher grades. The proposed floor plan has classrooms only for fifth and sixth grades with the ground floor belonging to the seventh and eighth graders. The first proposed first floor is split between the two academies. Both groups will have their own cafeterias and gymnasiums as well.

“The reality of this is really coming to fruition and we’re on our way to building what will be a signature school, followed by South Middle School,” Mayor Joe Sullivan said.
