Work Starts on Braintree's MBTA Bridge

Mayor Joseph Sullivan has announced that upgrades are starting on the Union Street bridge for both physical and visual improvements.

Upgrades to the structure and aesthetics of the MBTA bridge in Braintree over Union Street have begun, Mayor Joseph Sullivan said in a recent announcement.

Sullivan has been working with MBTA GM Rich Davey to see improvements to the bridge that is used by Red Line and commuter trains. Residents will see 10 weeks of traffic inconvenience, Town Engineer Robert Campbell said, but much larger problems would have arisen if a complete replacement became necessary.

“This bridge improvement project fits in nicely with our overall beautification effort throughout town," Sullivan said. “However, it is more than cosmetic, this is foremost a capital improvement upgrade that enhances public safety.”

Work includes a new sign on the side of the bridge facing the Union Street Rotary welcoming people to Braintree. Heidi Hurley of the art department helped design the sign, featuring a "Braintree Blue" background.

“With the support of Mayor Sullivan we are underway with a facelift of the bridge that will not only improve its appearance, but also boast a well-lit, safe, welcoming structure adorned with community art," Davey said.
