Brockton Crash Hospitalized 6, Man Charged With Drunken Driving

The crash sent six people to the hospital, including three children. Police said the suspect had his daughter and niece in the car with him.

BROCKTON, MA — A Brockton man is facing charges after police said he drove drunk and caused a five-car crash, which hospitalized six people, including three children.

Flavio Rosario Pereira, 38, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, marked lane violations, and speeding. Pereira will be arraigned in Brockton District Court.

On Sunday afternoon, police were called to the intersection at Quincy and Centre streets. Officers found several damaged vehicles. A Hyundai Sonata, which Pereira was driving, was sitting atop the hood of a Honda Civic, police told the Brockton Enterprise. According to Brockton Police Spokesman Darren Duarte, Pereira was speeding, illegally tried to pass someone, and then collided with a Jeep Cherokee, which led to the five-car crash. Duarte told the Enterprise, Pereira kept driving until he hit a sign and a pole on Centre Street.

According to police, Pereira had his 2-year-old daughter and 8-year-old niece with him during the crash. Pereira and the two children were taken to South Shore Hospital. His daughter was not injured, but Pereira and his niece suffered non life-threatening injuries, the Enterprise reported. Three others, including a 2-year-old girl, were taken to Brockton Hospital. All injuries were minor.
