Southeastern Regional Voc-Tech Student Wins National Scholarship
Car Racing Enthusiast Receives Scholarship for Exceptional Knowledge
Austin Nelson, an Automotive Technology student from Brockton, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the University of Northwestern Ohio for his exceptional knowledge about high performance and racing vehicles. The Grade 12 student received the scholarship by placing second out of 1,500 students in an admissions test that he took last fall, while visiting the campus. The school notified Southeastern Regional about the results, and a representative came to the school to give congratulate him in February.
“I was very pleased to get the award. I definitely plan to attend the school, and my plans right now are to get an associate degree in high performance and a bachelor’s degree in marketing,” he said.
Austin discovered the university while attending a race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He was excited to learn that there was a college that offered a program that specialized in high performance vehicles. He said his lifelong interest in car racing, along with his education, gave him a great preparation for the test.

“I always liked to watch car racing with my family, and I now work with a charity NASCAR team
in New Hampshire. I think my interests, along with my vocational experience at Southeastern, helped me to do well on the test,” he said.

Besides his volunteer work as a spotter on a Christian-based NASCAR team for the Church of Abundant Life in Braintree, Austin works as an apprentice mechanic at Bourne’s Auto Center, in Easton, through Southeastern’s co-op program. He also continues to enjoy working on cars around his house, which he has been doing since was young boy with other family members.
Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School is a public 9-12 vocational high school located in Easton, Massachusetts, serving approximately 1,250 students from the city of Brockton and the towns of East Bridgewater, Easton, Foxborough, Mansfield, Norton, Sharon, Stoughton, and West Bridgewater.
