A Test Away From High School Degree, Award-Winning Brockton Man Faces Deportation

Haitian immigrant and Brockton resident Cansery Goguette has been here for seven years but may soon have to return to his native country.

BROCKTON, MA — Haitian immigrant and Brockton resident Cansery Goguette is a test away from his high school diploma, has spent seven years learning English, wants to become a police investigator, and was named the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education's student of year. None of that however may matter soon.

Goguette, who came to America after fleeing Port-au-Prince following a January 2010 earthquake, is here on temporary protected status which expires this year, according to the Enterprise.

Gougette, the father of two sons born in America, is scheduled to be deported July 22.

John Kelly, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has up to May 23 to decide whether 50,000 Haitians with TPS will be forced to return to their home country or if the program will be extended for 18 months.

TPS status is granted to foreign nationals who leave their home country due to extraordinary reasons including armed conflicts and natural disasters.
