Vietnam Veteran Dies Days After Getting Hit By Car

The victim served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. His family described him as an electrician who was always helping others.

EAST BRIDGEWATER, MA — Six days after being struck by a car while walking down a dark, rural road, a Vietnam veteran from Whitman has died.

Steve McDonald, 66, died on Friday at Brigham and Women's Hospital after succumbing to his injuries from the crash on Jan. 6, the Plymouth County district attorney’s office told the Brockton Enterprise.

According to police, McDonald was walking on Harvard Street around 8:30 p.m. That particular part of the road was rural, not well-lit, and doesn't have sidewalks. He was struck by a 2017 Nissan Altima. The driver was a 47-year-old woman from West Bridgewater, who police said was cooperative. It's unclear whether charges will be filed, the Enterprise reported.

According to McDonald's obituary, he was originally from Wareham, and also lived in Brockton before moving to Whitman. McDonald was in the Air Force and served during the Vietnam war.He was an electrician and was always helping others, the obituary said.

Following cremation, McDonald's ashes will be brought to the VA National Cemetery in Bourne.
