Brookline U-11 Boys Baseball and North Cambridge Square Off in the Heat

Brookline's under-11 boys rallied against their North Cambridge counterparts on the hottest day of the year at Warren Field.

Downing enough Gatorade and water to hydrate an NFL team, the Brookline Bay State Baseball B under-11 boys baseball team took on a strong opponent in North Cambridge at Warren Field on Tuesday, but lost 4-2 despite a fifth-inning rally.

The beginning of the game featured strong pitching for North Cambridge, whose pitcher kept Brookline from getting on base until the third inning. Brookline eventually found their chances through walks and stolen bases, catching the North Cambridge infielders off-guard. Brookline left men on base for two straight innings, while North Cambridge held on to an early three-run lead.

A frustrated Brookline team came to bat in the bottom of the fifth, and North Cambridge's pitcher quickly sat two batters in a row. Brookline again found success in a walk to first. That walked batter soon stole second, and a deep hit to right field sent him into score. The next Brookline batter hit right into the sun in left field and got another run in, getting Brookline back in the game with a score of 3-2. Brookline got another player on base before North Cambridge was able to end the fifth with a major-league worthy sliding catch by the shortstop.

North Cambridge scored in the top of the sixth, after a hit to right field allowed the player at third to score. Brookline quickly finished the half inning by catching a high pop-up to first base.

Brookline looked to be mounting another rally after they walked a player to first to kick off the bottom of the sixth, but it was not to be. They left two men on base as the game ended with a tag at first base. North Cambridge won a tight game 4-2.

The two teams will meet again on Thursday evening in North Cambridge.
