Brookline to Vote on Ninth School Site Thursday

After a lengthy selection process, the site for Brookline's newest school is expected to be decided.

BROOKLINE, MA – The Brookline School Committee and Board of Selectmen are expected to decide on the location of Brookline's ninth school Thursday at a joint meeting.

According to Brookline Public Schools, tomorrow night's meeting will begin at 8 p.m. at Brookline High School. The decision comes after a year-long selection process, which included a series of public hearings and closed committee meetings.

Three sites remain as candidates – the Baldwin site, Baker site and Village (Stop & Shop) site.

The need for a ninth school in Brookline comes as enrollment in the town's schools increased dramatically. According to the BPS website, K-8 enrollment has increased from 3,896 students to 6,193 students since 2005, representing a 40 percent increase in enrollment.

Brookline anticipates an additional 700 K-8 students in the next five years, as well as 451 high school students, the Brookline TAB reported.

In the past eight years, Brookline has added 54 classrooms, according to BPS. Some have been modular, others have been built and some have been converted from already owned or rented property.
