Brookline Warns Late Fees Still Apply Despite Tax Payment Mail Delays

BROOKLINE, MA — Town officials are warning residents that mailed tax payments have been delayed, and taxpayers could still face fees and interest even if they put their payment in the mail before the deadline.

In a recent town notice, the Treasurer Collector’s Office said Brookline has been experiencing delays in receiving mailed tax payments through the U.S. Postal Service. Under Massachusetts law, the town said it cannot waive fees or interest based on the postmark date.

The town is urging residents who mail payments to allow at least two weeks before the due date. Officials also pointed residents to other payment options, including the town’s online bill payment portal, phone payments, in-person payments and the locked drop box outside Town Hall.

The issue is likely to matter most to residents who still rely on paper checks or mail-in payments, especially seniors or taxpayers who wait until close to a due date. Once the payment arrives late, Brookline says it does not have legal flexibility to forgive the added charges simply because the envelope was mailed on time.

The Brookline Village Post Office is currently closed indefinitely due to a fire that broke out at its location on 207 Washington St. The USPS is recommending residents use the post office at 1295 Beacon St. in Coolidge Corner while its counterpart remains closed.
