Kibrick Helps Snap Brookline Losing Streak With Three Homers

Third baseman propels under-12 team to much-needed 11-10 victory over South Boston.

It would be quite the understatement to say that Alex Kibrick is seeing results from his extra swings in the batting cage.

The Brookline third baseman had been in a dry spell in recent games, but that changed Tuesday night when he displayed his ability to hit to all fields by cracking home runs to left, center and right field. The extra runs helped propel the Brookline under-12 A-Division Bay State team to an 11-10 win over South Boston at Warren Field and end a seven-game losing streak.

"Alex had a hot start then we faced some really tough pitching and he had a bit of a slump," Brookline head coach Jim Wulfson said. "But he put more time in batting practice and it shows."

In a back-and-forth game that had five lead changes, Kibrick (six RBIs) got the scoring started for the Warriors with a solo shot in the first inning. He then put Brookline on top 4-2 in the second with his second home run of the night.

After South Boston put three runs on the board in the third, the Warriors answered with 5 of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Liam Connor-Moreno and Patrick Webles each knocked in a run before Kibrick's opposite-field three-run bomb gave Brookline a 9-5 lead.

Brookline held a 10-5 lead going into the top of the sixth but a furious South Boston rally saw five runs come across the plate to knot the game at 10.

Leon Yang ignited the Warrior offense in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single off the center field fence and eventually scored on a wild pitch to seal an important 11-10 victory.

"I had a feeling it was going to be one of those games where whoever had last at bat would win," Wulfson said.

The Warriors will try to build on Tuesday's win, which was the first game in the third round of trophy games, after a 0-6 showing in the second round. The team will next play Friday at home at 5:30 p.m. to kick off a stretch four consecutive days.

"These four games are really going to test our pitching depth," Wulfson said.
