Shoplifting and then a Natty Ice Beer, Please: Brookline Police Logs

The Natty Ice beer drinking suspects and not so smooth drivers with suspended licences.

The following are excerpts from the Brookline Police Incident Log, which is a public information.

Friday, April 21, 2017

B&E: A Mason Terrace resident called to report their car was broken into overnight. The resident said she noticed the contents of the center console and glove box emptied out on the floor and passenger seat in the morning, though she didn't think anything was stolen. Police said they couldn't process the car for prints because the owner had already used the car.

Threats: Someone reported being threatened at a business on Washington Street by a man they described as approximately 5' 10" with a dark jacket, dark pants and dark hat. The employee said the man came into the business to start membership but then refused to provide all the necessary information to complete the membership application. The employee said they then told the man that without the information he could not complete the application. That's when the man became agitated and stated "I'm going to shoot you" and then left the building. Police said he didn't show a weapon, but officers checked the area to no avail. Police were later able to identify the man and sent him a summons to Brookline District Court for threatening to commit a crime.

Stolen from an open house: A Prince Street resident called to report of a stolen Ipod from her kitchen in an Ipod docking station. The woman said her apartment was being shown to perspective tenants by a real estate agent. The agent said he showed three couples the apartment, and that he would replace the missing item.

Fraud: A woman came into the station around 5:30 p.m. to report someone was making charges on her credit card without her permission. She told police she lost her wallet with several credit cards in the Coolidge Corner area earlier. She said she cancelled all her cards except for one and then received an e-mail from MasterCard reporting $700 worth of fraudulent charges made at Macy’s in the Cambridge Side Galleria and Macy’s in Boston.

Saturday, April 22

Traffic: Police officer ran the plates of a car parked near the corner of Pine and Woodland roads and found that the registration was revoked due to lack of insurance. They had the car towed and issued the owner a Massachusetts Uniform Citation for unregistered car and revoked insurance.

Missing Motorcycle: A Winchester Street resident called to report his motorcycle - which was parked in the driveway, next to the house and had a black and gray motorcycle cover draped over it to protect it- appeared to be stolen.

Car break in: Someone came into the Brookline Police Station to report that his vehicle had been broken into while he was parked near1280 Beacon Street. He said he noticed his cell phone had been taken from the center console as well as some change. He did say he left his window slightly open when he parked the vehicle and when he returned the window was almost completely open.
Bumped: Someone on Babcock Street reported that while he was shopping he was bumped into twice by the same person. After the second bump, the man said he noticed that his black leather wallet was no longer in his back pocket. The victim tried to locate the individual who had bumped into him, but was unable to find him. He described the man who bumped him as about 6'3", 280 lbs, in his late 40's or early 50's, wearing a red cap, dark winter jacket, and blue jeans.

Gucci gone: A Dwight Street resident called police to report a possible theft. A woman said she was walking her dog in Coolidge Corner when she noticed her small brown Gucci wallet missing from her wrist. She said that her dog is only 7 months old and people were crowding her to pet it. She said she did remember one man approaching her to pet the dog around the time she noticed the wallet missing, but the only description she could give was that he was about 5'4" with dark hair. She said she most likely misplaced the wallet, but is unsure if it was potentially picked up by someone.

GPS Distraction? It's a thing: Someone reported that a car crashed into a parked car on Aspinwall Avenue. No injuries were reported and both vehicles were towed. Police ended up citing the driver of the car that did the crashing for being distracted by his GPS device.

Monday, April 24

Dog bite: Brookline Animal Control conducted a follow-up for a dog bite incident at Griggs Park.
Unemployement: A St. Mary's Street resident came to the front desk of the Brookline Police Station to report Identity Fraud. The resident said he has been receiving a number of letters in the mail and E-mails from various credit card and other agencies about fraudulent use of his personal information. The victim and his wife have both received these notices. The man said he even received a letter from the Department of Unemployment Assistance stating that someone had tried to file for Unemployment benefits under his name.

Bicycle gone: Someone onVillage Way reported their black Cannondale Catalyst bicycle was locked to a bicycle rack by chain in the private parking lot between 77 and 70 Village Way and it was no longer there.
Speedster: While conducting traffic enforcement on West Roxbury Parkway, officers saw a car approaching the inside lane at a high rate of speed. They reported they visually estimated the car going 50 MPH. Using the department issued Lidar it was determined the vehicle was travelling 52 MPH at 407 feet in a posted 35MPH zone. The Officer activated the blue overhead lights and stopped the vehicle. A license check through Brookline Control showed the drivers right to operate a vehicle in Massachusetts was suspended due to 3 surcharged events. The driver was placed under arrest for Operating after Suspension-License and Speeding and his vehicle was towed.
Package woes: A Lawton Street resident came up to officers on the street to report that a package she had received had been torn open. She told police she didn't think anything was taken. The Officers took the torn box to check for finger prints. Several security cameras are at this location and attempts will be made to view footage, police noted.
Expired: While conducting traffic enforcement on Harvard Street, officers observed a vehicle with an inspection sticker that expired in January this year. The vehicle then made a left turn onto Longwood Avenue. Police said a check on the vehicles registration revealed its status was revoked due to the lack of insurance. Police pulled over the car removed the license plates and submitted into the bulk property room and the vehicle was towed.
Tide Caper: Someone at a business on Harvard Street reported a man had just shoplifted some Tide laundry detergent and was carrying a blue dufflebag. They described the man as wearing dark clothes, possibly a hooded sweatshirt, heading out to the area of Aspinwall Avenue. A Brookline Police officer. Stopped a subject fitting that description and consuming a Natty Ice beer in public. While speaking with this subject the officers observed an open blue duffel bag with bottles of Tide detergent sticking out. After speaking with the subject he admitted to taking the detergent without paying for it. An employee positively identified the subject the Officers had stopped as the one they watched putting the Tide detergent in a blue duffel bag. The subject was placed under arrest and transported to Brookline Police Headquarters. The Natty Ice beer can that the subject was drinking was submitted into evidence, and the tide detergent was returned to the store.
