1 Injured After Jumping From Window During Somerville Fire

SOMERVILLE, MA — One person was injured and taken to a hospital after a fire broke out at a Somerville apartment building early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded to 37 Dartmouth St. at approximately 2:57 a.m. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions inside a first-floor apartment, with flames coming out of a window and spreading along the building's exterior to the second floor, the city told Patch.

A first-floor occupant jumped out of a window before firefighters' arrival and was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening. Firefighters also heard screams for help and assisted a second-floor occupant out of the building through heavy smoke conditions.

"Two cats were also located and removed to safety," the City of Somerville told Patch.

The three-story building contains five residential units, and all occupants have been displaced as a result of the blaze. The Red Cross and Somerville City services are assisting those impacted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
