We have some wonderful cheap or free touring opportunities in Brookline and Jamaica Plain this week at Frugal Family. We can get our history on, and get our exercise on, without having to eat mac n' cheese at each meal for the remainder of the month.

Chestnut Hill to learn about Mary Baker Eddy (1821 - 1910) who worked throughout her life to establish Christian Science in Lynn, Boston, and Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and in Concord, New Hampshire. The Museum contains documents pertaining to her life and the lives of Christian Scientists who assisted her in establishing this worldwide religion. Admission is free and the museum is open Monday, Wednesday through Saturday:10 AM – 4 PM and Sunday:1 PM – 4 PM.

A Short Walk on a Long Day - Olmsted Park, Brookline
Deal: A Short Walk on a Long Day is a great tour that will occur on Tuesday, June 21, from 6 – 8 PM. Celebrate the summer solstice at Olmsted Park, located on the border of Boston’s Mission Hill and Brookline’s Pill Hill neighborhoods. Learn about the lesser-known Emerald Necklace park that features three ponds, a babbling brook, and one of the Necklace’s recent restoration efforts. The group will meet at the corner of Pond Avenue and Willow Pond Road, Brookline. Sunblock might not be necessary, but bring some bug spray to keep those buzzing interlopers away!

Deal: Amidst all of the learning and history and exercise, we at Frugal Family needed a quick music. This event would be for those members of the Frugal Family who are above drinking age, so perhaps after a day of walking tours, the kids can veg out at home with a good book while the adults head to , located at 1010 Beacon Street in Brookline to listen to The Gravel Project, an energetic band that loves its modern blues and funk! Admission is free and the show starts at 10 PM. And after all that walking, a cool adult beverage wouldn’t be the worst thing.

Deal: So you’ve lived in a Jamaica Plain for a number of years now. You think you know each side street and back corner that the town has to offer. But why not brush up on your history this weekend and take a walking tour of - This neighborhood developed from nineteenth-century summer estates into a model suburban enclave. It also contains an unusual garden city model housing development by the Boston Dwelling House Company. The tour is free, starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday and promises to be a great time.

– 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain
Deal: While we’re looking around beautiful Jamaica Plain, the Frugal Fam might want to check out the at 12 South Street. Volunteers guide visitors through the historic house on Sundays from noon to 2 PM, from April through December. Admission is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5. The house is an impressive example of Georgian Colonial architecture and was the hub of a large and actively developed farm that was Joshua Loring’s chief interest following his retirement from military service.
