Barre Yoga Or Bar Yoga? Burlington Gym Seeks Liquor License

Life Time Athletic wants to add a full-service restaurant to the massive gym it recently opened in Northwest Park.

BURLINGTON, MA -- In the NBC sitcom Alec Baldwin's character once described a situation the cast was facing as "Weird...in a good way. Like going to the gym drunk." Now a Burlington gym wants to eliminate the need to pre-game before you work out by becoming the first in Massachusetts to offer a full-service restaurant. The Burlington Planning board has approved a special permit for Life Time Athletic which allows it to obtain a liquor license for the 127,850-square-foot gym it opened this spring.

Burlington zoning laws require businesses to have a full-service restaurant before a liquor license is granted. "The idea is...you can play basketball with a group of people and have a beer after, or a yoga class can meet afterwards and have a glass of wine," William Proia, an attorney representing Life Time, told the planning board. Selectmen still need to sign off on the application before Life Time can get a liquor license.
