"Hairspray" Was So Fabulous!
This blog post is about the thrill of seeing "Hairspray" at Burlington High School.

Well, I just went to Hairspray for the third time on Sunday afternoon, closing performance. My daughter, Claire, who is a freshman, was in it. I have to say, it kept getting better. I think the students did just as well on the first night as the last, but I was more excited at the last performance. I was anticipating those hilarious moments and catchy tunes. I wasn't familiar with the show. I just knew that it existed, was made into a movie, and that John Travolta played a woman. That's it. I was so pleasantly surprised by the show itself and by the performance of the high school kids.
Hairspray has a profound message about integration in the 60's. It is also about the celebration of diversity in all of its forms (race, religion, and yes, even weight!) It is an upbeat, light musical with important themes that make it more than just a fluffy fun show.
I was also very impressed by the performance of the students. I was especially knocked out by the comedic talent. The timing and presence of some of the leads was exceptional. And the ensemble was so enthusiastic, high energy, and very involved. What is a musical without that chorus? Not much, no matter how good the leads are!

I have to say that many of the kids up on stage were in The Children's Chorus that I directed with Margaret Corsino when they were in elementary and middle school. I am not taking credit for their success. I am really proud of them and proud to have been a part of their musical educaton and love of singing!
