BURLINGTON, MA — The Burlington Board of Health passed rules that will require people who keep chickens to obtain a permit from the town. Previously, residents were allowed to keep up to three chickens without a permit. While residents are still not allowed to keep roosters, the new rules lift a cap on the number of backyard chickens residents can keep.

To obtain a permit, residents will need to submit a plot plan, as well as manure and turf management plans. The board of health will establish a cap on the number of chickens allowed to each permit holder on a case-by-case basis.
